In the words of Jack DeJohnette and Gary Peacock: Jarrett can play from extremely soft to a powerful and rich loud as opposed to Bill Evans which had a much narrower dynamic range. Philly Joe Jones was his favorite drummer, he had heath on bass on interplay with freddie hubbard as well, sam jones, jack dejohnette etc.....Miles also wasn't so racist..he was towards some but he actually stuck up for Bill and only cared about music and not the color of their skin...read his bio it's amazing...both of theirs

Yeah Bill Evans really complimented Miles Davis well. The band with Herbie Hancock is considered his second great quintet or whatever, but I actually think Bill Evans with Miles Davis was better, obviously Herbie Hancock is a giant and perhaps a better pianist but Bill Evans had so much emotion in his playing

Yeah I know Miles Davis had a lot of difficult experiences with whites so I'm not saying that his stance wasn't understandable for someone in his position, however after reading his autobiography he definitely struck me as not being too fond of white people; he thought that white people liked "Kind of Blue" so much only because Bill Evans was involved.

I think what Bill was doing in the 50's and 60's, along with a few others, was taking Jazz and saying, alright, all jazz doesn't have to always go fast to be jazz, it can be slowed down, introspective, and tasteful.

Compare Miles' earlier quintet pianist Red Garland who improvised lines mostly within the strict scale that goes with the chord and voiced chords in 3rds. Bill Evans in this piece here plays a lot of voicings with dissonant rubs in the chords, the 7th against the root etc. which gives it an impressionist sound. This wasn't innovative in itself since it was already done by Debussy in the 1800s. But he brought this impressionist sound to the jazz mainstream, so he's considered innovative.

What is truly remarkable about his playing is i.e. the use of quarter chords (he developed that technique very differently from McCoy Tyner in that time. And if you listen carefully you'll notice that the way that he displaces his phrases are very unique. But to me, his voicings are the true charm. Play a Ghalfdiminished from high to low like this: G - Db - Bb - Eb - A. The first chord of Bill's version of " On a clear day you can see forever" He was really ahead of his time.

Besides all the technical hype that is true with Bill, he created a sound that was distinct to him. It's on Kind of Blue, and also his early albums with cuts like Peace Peace. I think that it is more apparent in his slower numbers. Try Bill Evans-My Foolish Heart here on youtube. Then check out what other piano players were doing when he emerged....and maybe Bill will come to you too.

I had the good fortune to hear Bill Evans with this trio at Ronnie Scotts in London; I was working opposite, suporting and accompanying singer Julie Amiet. Every set the trio played was wonderful. Sadly Bill passed away a few weeks later. May he forever Rest in Peace. Ken Baldock

I think this is the epitome of a jazz trio. I was priviledged to hear this same Bill Evans trio shortly after this concert, at the University of North Texas, Denton, in my first year there. Then, sadly, not long after that, Bill died. Thanks for this video. It brought back memories of an unforgettable concert by an unforgettable jazz master and his group. (btw, Marc Johnson had spend just one year at North Texas School of Music before Evans snatched him up.)

Aw, com'n now...he (Gil) had lots of help from Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, here. It's not like he had to figure out those harmonies "from scratch"! Same with Gershwin on Rhapsody in Blue. To me, Miles is like Stanley Clarke when they solo. They always pick the "coolest" last three notes to end a phrase with :-)
